Marché aux Puces de Plainpalais

The Marché aux Puces de Plainpalais is the flea market of Genève, Wednesdays and Saturdays, all year round, on the Plaine de Plainpalais. The city of Genève calls it the biggest flea market in Switzerland, and around 300 traders are registered. The stalls line the edge of the diamond-shaped Plaine under the trees of the avenue du Mail and the avenue Henri-Dunant. Genève's second-hand dealers have traded since 1898, first in Saint-Gervais and on the rue Coutance, and on the Plaine since 1970.

Only used goods are sold, by professional traders with a municipal card: furniture, lamps, ceramics and glass, books, records, clothing, tools, curiosities. Price tags are not required, and bargaining is part of the deal. It is a working market, not a show: the early hours belong to the hunters, the size rewards patience, and Saturday is busier than Wednesday. The tram stops at the Plainpalais stop, the parking lies beneath the square, and a buvette and cafés stand at the edge. There is a market on the Plaine on Sundays too, but it is more of a produce market than a vintage one.
