Flohmarkt Grosse Halle

The Flohmarkt in der Grossen Halle der Reitschule Bern is a strictly second-hand flea market in the middle of Bern, held about ten times a year on the first Sunday of the month, with a break in January and August. Stalls fill the hall itself and spill out across the forecourt onto the Schützenmatte, part covered, part open-air. Only used goods are sold, by sellers who book stalls of one to four metres. Part of Bern city life since 1997, it draws around 3,000 visitors every month.

The non-profit Verein Grosse Halle sees it as a place where people of every background trade with one another, and bargaining is part of it. No other Bern market has so mixed a crowd, and it meets in one of the city's great 19th-century halls: the Reitschule, built 1895 to 1897 to plans by Albert Gerster and Bern's autonomous cultural centre since 1987. The column-free hall of about 1,500 m² with exposed brick was gently renovated in 2018/19. The Verein Medina cooks a cheap lunch on site, prepared with people who otherwise face many closed doors.
